Rise in Hotel Cancellations Due to Devastating Flood in Kerala

Rise in Hotel Cancellations Due to Devastating Flood in Kerala

If you’re not living under a rock you’d know that Kerala has been hit with heavy floods few days back! But the latest news revealed that there is an indication of easing of rain in Kerala! An orange weather alert (which signals preparedness) has been issued across 11 districts out of the 14.

Saying all that, now, let’s talk about the status quo of hotels in Kerala. According to The Times of India, the hotel cancellations have soared as floods damaged most of the tourism destinations in South Indian state, Kerala. The hotel cancellations have been rising since the August 10. “On an average, hotel cancellations have risen to over 50 per cent. Air bookings have also seen a clear spike in cancellations — around 20 per cent on an average — from August 14 to August 16.

One of the best OTAs in India, Cleartrip said that the cities from where travelers have been impacted the most are Bangalore, Mumbai, New Delhi, Chennai, Hyderabad and Pune! While in general the average cancellation of confirmed hotels bookings in Kerala are 4.4% there is a heavy chance for more cancellations in the upcoming hotel bookings! Due to the devastating flood, OTA pundits are saying that the rate might be doubled to 8.31 per cent or more , especially since August 12.

Floods due to the unprecedented monsoon fury in Kerala has wrecked the tourism industry and seriously impacted the plantation sector, which are among the major revenue sources for the state. Just as the tourism industry was recovering from the cancellation of bookings at hotels and resorts following the Nipah outbreak, heavy rains and floods came as a huge blow, say industry sources.

Also, according to the reports released by the Indian Association of Tour Operators, already 70 to 80 percent cancellations had taken place in Idukki, Munnar, Kumarakom, which are among the most preferred destinations by domestic and international tourists. The downpour has played spoilsport for the tourism department's plans to organise the famed snake boat races, which have mesmerised visitors for ages, under a new league.

The God’s Own Country has taken a toll on the tourism industry as well! With tourist flow to Munnar regulated, Nehru Trophy boat race has been postponed; hotels and tour operators are getting numerous cancellations in the past two days. As compared to 2017, only 13% participants are going to take part in the 2018 boat race as the downpour has played spoilsport for the tourism department's plans to organise the famed snake boat races, which have mesmerised visitors for ages, under a new league.

Continuous rain has affected Munnar tourism and hotel bookings which thrives mostly during the month of August. Around 70% of tour packages booked in connection with Neelakurinji blooming has been cancelled. The tourist arrival to Fort Kochi and Kochi City has come down. The entire Fort Kochi beach is underwater for the last several weeks and the roads in Kochi are in a poor condition. Frequent traffic blocks, forcing the foreign tourist to skip Kochi from their itinerary is also another reason for the downfall of hotel bookings in that area.

Many eminent hotel authorities of Kerala proclaimed that the condition of hotels & tourism and travel industry will take some time to recuperate because this is an unprecedented situation and is the worst monsoon ever that hit Kerala in the last 100 years! Within the coming 2 months the situation will be better and Kerala will again attract more number of tourists as usual! Trilyo prays for the families who suffered during the floods because it’s terrible to hear about the losses and we express our sincere sympathy to them and their family. May their soul Rest In Peace!
